Den Meeting - 09/23/08 PDF Print E-mail

Tonight we started out with our opening ceremonies, as usual with the rest of the dens.  After that Mr. Don Ulrich of Troop 11 and District Training Commissioner talked to parents and new leaders about making sure they get proper training and to contact him with any questions.

Afterwards, Cubmaster Sandy reiterated that all the new scouts that they be working toward their Bobcat Badge.  All Bobcat Badge Requirements must be met before proceeding with their Tiger/Wolf/Bear/Webelos 1 & 2 Badge.

We all went upstairs to look over the rooms to pick our den rooms out and Wolf Den is straight down the hallway.  Mr. Davis went over the Bobcat badge requirements and some of the boys went up and they did a great job practicing.  It was also a good refresher for our former Tiger Cubs.

It was time to head down to the main area for our Foil Pack lesson with Chez Sandy.  Mr. Sandy was slicing and dicing vegetables, meats and more.  The boys got a chance to have some apples, while they were watching.

Time to mosey on home, so see you next week!

Reminder - JAKES Day this weekend!  Check the Pack 11 Documents Link for the Foil Pack Instructions and the Cub Scout Camping Check List to make sure you have what you need!

Wolf Den 1 Meeting – 09/16/08

After starting the meeting off with a few of the boys reciting the Pledge of Allegiance, Cub Scout Promise, Cub Scout Law and the Cub Scout Motto, we separated into our own dens for our activities.  Thanks go out to J.B., Andrew, Josh and Quinn.

NOTE TO ALL NEW WOLVES – In order to get your Wolf Badge, you’ll need to complete the Bobcat Badge Requirements.  Please work on these as much as you can with your Akela and when you feel ready, recite them to me and I’ll sign off in your book.

Since September is National Preparedness Month, we started toward our Wolf Badge with Section 9C on page 84 in the Wolf Handbook.  We utilized the When Fire Strikes Safety Checklist & Floor Plan Graph to check off Fire Prevention procedures and tips, as well as map out our home with paths to exit in case of fire or other emergencies.  Akelas discussed with their Cubs about where to meet up, so that everyone is accounted for.

Den Leader Davis explained to the Akelas about the Emergency Preparedness Award that our Scouts could achieve in addition to their Wolf Badge.  You can find the requirements document for Wolves here.  For around $20-25, we can schedule a Saturday morning for a few hours to have the local Twin Rivers Red Cross Chapter give Basic Aid Training, which is one of the major requirements that must be met to achieve the Emergency Preparedness Award.  But this isn’t just about receiving an extra merit award, but about having our boys prepared to help out when emergencies arise.  Den Leader Davis will be discussing with the other Dens in the Pack to see if there is any additional interest.

After our Advancement activity, we went outside and played a game called Harbor Master.  Our boys (and one girl to even out turns) took turns playing the Harbor Master, the Ship, and the Buoys.  The object of the game is for the Harbor Master to guide the Ship, who’s sailing blind through the buoys in the harbor.  The boy playing the Ship is blindfolded, so he can’t see.  The Harbor Master, using only his voice, guides the Ship through the Buoys (other Scouts) who have to remain silent and still.  It was a blast seeing how the boys had fun with the 2-Way Radios to spice the game up a little and everyone did a great job playing the game.

Reflecting back on the game, ask yourself or Scout.
How did the Harbor Master feel to only use his voice to guide the Ship safely?
How did the Ship feel not being able to see his path at all?
How did the Buoys feel not being able to move or speak of impending danger?

Hopefully, the boys would learn that staying calm and following directions can avert a lot of life’s little (and big) disasters.

September is National Preparedness Month and I suggest everyone take a look at this web site.

http://www.ready.gov/america/npm08/intro.html

This is especially important with our geographical location in North Carolina and we have 3-4 hurricanes that could potentially cause problems for us, if we're not prepared.
